Why Choose Chad Populis Photography for Maternity Portraits?
My approach to maternity photography combines portrait experience, professional lighting, guided posing, and an understanding that different clients need different approaches.
The goal is not to force every maternity client into the same visual formula.
Instead, we create photographs based on your appearance, wardrobe, comfort level, family, location, and the type of images you actually want.
Chad Populis Photography is based in Gretna and photographs clients throughout New Orleans and surrounding South Louisiana communities.
The Maternity Photography Experience
A maternity session should feel guided from beginning to end.
Before we photograph anything, we’ll discuss the type of images you want to create, your wardrobe, preferred location, who will participate, and any inspiration you have.
During the session, I’ll direct your posing, posture, hand placement, expression, and movement.
We’ll make small adjustments throughout the shoot so the photographs remain flattering without making you feel stiff or overly posed.
The objective is not simply to photograph your baby bump.
It is to create a collection of portraits that documents you during a major stage of your life.

Maternity Photography Designed Around You
Every pregnancy and every person photographs differently.
Instead of relying on a fixed set of poses, I adjust the session to your body, comfort level, wardrobe, location, and the style you want to create.
Your maternity session can feel:
-
Elegant and editorial
-
Soft and natural
-
Clean and minimal
-
Romantic
-
Bold and fashion-inspired
-
Casual and lifestyle-focused
Your partner and children can also be included so the gallery documents more than your pregnancy—it can also capture this stage of your family.
Guided Posing & Professional Lighting
You do not need to practice poses before your maternity session.
Direction is part of the service.
I’ll guide you through body angle, posture, hand placement, chin position, movement, and expression while making adjustments based on what photographs best.
We will also vary poses throughout the session rather than creating dozens of nearly identical images.
Lighting receives the same attention.
Whether we are working with natural light, studio lighting, or a combination of both, the goal is to preserve skin tone, dimension, texture, and detail while creating flattering portraits.
This is especially important when photographing couples and families with different complexions within the same image.

Studio & Outdoor Maternity Photography
Your location has a major influence on how maternity photographs feel.
Studio maternity photography gives us control over the background, lighting, mood, and privacy of the session.
It works especially well for clean portraits, dramatic lighting, silhouettes, fashion-inspired images, and more minimal compositions.
Outdoor maternity photography creates a different atmosphere.
New Orleans offers greenery, historic architecture, waterfront settings, oak trees, gardens, and urban environments that can give the photographs a stronger sense of place.
Depending on the look you want, possible session areas may include City Park, Audubon Park, the Lakefront, the Garden District, and other New Orleans-area locations where photography is appropriate.
The final recommendation will depend on lighting, weather, crowds, accessibility, and any photography restrictions.

Maternity Portraits With Your Partner & Family

Your pregnancy is also part of your family’s story.
Partners are welcome in every maternity package, and children can be included in a portion of the session.
We can create a mixture of:
-
Individual maternity portraits
-
Couple portraits
-
Family maternity portraits
-
Walking and interaction photographs
-
Hands on the baby bump
-
Close-up details
-
More formal family portraits
-
Natural candid moments
You will still receive plenty of photographs focused specifically on you.

Wardrobe & Styling
Wardrobe can completely change the mood of a maternity session.
Depending on the style you want, options may include fitted dresses, flowing maternity gowns, simple neutral clothing, bodysuits, jeans and tops, fabric or draped looks, or more editorial wardrobe choices.
Your clothing should complement the photographs rather than overwhelm them.
Before the session, we can discuss how each look will work with your chosen background, lighting, and location.
Partners and family members should coordinate with your wardrobe rather than necessarily wearing identical colors.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos

For many expecting mothers, approximately 28 to 34 weeks provides a good balance between a clearly visible baby bump and the ability to comfortably move through a portrait session.
That is a guideline rather than a rule.
Every pregnancy is different.
Clients expecting multiples, experiencing mobility concerns, or simply preferring an earlier session may want to schedule sooner.
I recommend reaching out before your preferred photography window so we have enough time to select the date, location, and session style.
From Planning to Final Gallery

Planning Your Session
We’ll discuss your due date, session timing, wardrobe, preferred style, location, participating family members, and any inspiration you would like me to see.
Photography Day
I’ll guide the session rather than expecting you to create poses on your own.
We will work through different angles, expressions, poses, wardrobe looks, and combinations based on the package selected.
Editing & Delivery
Your selected photographs will receive professional editing and will be delivered through a private online gallery with high-resolution digital downloads.
The finished photographs are edited for consistency while maintaining natural skin tone and avoiding excessive alteration.
