45th Birthday Girls’ Trip Photo Shoot at The Saint Hotel in New Orleans

A milestone birthday in New Orleans deserves more than a few phone pictures before heading out.

For this 45th birthday girls’ trip, two friends planned a full photo experience while getting ready for the August 28 Ye, formerly Kanye West, concert at Caesars Superdome. Instead of treating the photography as one quick portrait session, we used several spaces inside The Saint Hotel to create a gallery that moved from elegant hotel portraits to birthday boudoir, getting-ready moments and dramatic nightlife images.

The Michael Suite gave us enough variety to make the session feel more like an editorial story than a single-location birthday shoot.

Starting With The Saint Hotel and Michael Suite

Before photographing either of them, I wanted a few images that established where the birthday weekend was happening.

That meant photographing the suite décor, architectural details and some of the more distinctive spaces around the hotel.

Hotel sessions work especially well when the property gives us several visual styles within a small area. Instead of losing time driving around New Orleans between locations, we can move from a bright suite to textured walls, darker interiors and lounge spaces while keeping the session moving.

The Michael Suite gave us exactly that kind of variety.

Birthday Boudoir in the White Clawfoot Tub

One of the main birthday portraits was created around the suite's white clawfoot tub.

The birthday girl wore a silk kimono-style robe, giving the photographs a soft, elegant look while still allowing her elaborate back tattoo to become an important part of the portraits.

Instead of hiding the tattoo, I wanted to use posing and body position to make it part of the composition.

The white tub and robe created a clean foundation while the tattoo added contrast and personality. We worked through seated positions, over-the-shoulder portraits, back-facing poses and tighter detail images.

This is where a birthday trip can easily include both traditional portraits and boudoir without the entire shoot needing to become a lingerie session.

Relaxed Portraits in the Sitting Area

While the birthday girl changed and prepared for the next part of the shoot, we photographed her friend in the Michael Suite sitting area.

These portraits were intentionally simpler.

A chair or sofa, good body position, clean framing and subtle expression can be enough. Not every part of a birthday session needs to be dramatic.

Using the sitting area also gave each woman individual photographs instead of making the entire gallery about the birthday girl.

That is something I recommend for two-person and small girls' trip sessions: get the group photographs, but give everyone at least a few individual portraits too.

Makeup and Jewelry Getting-Ready Photos

The next part of the session documented the actual process of getting ready for the concert.

We photographed the birthday girl applying makeup, checking the final details and putting on her jewelry.

These photographs work because they give the finished portraits some context.

Rather than having a gallery consisting entirely of people looking directly into the camera, the getting-ready photographs give us hands, reflections, jewelry, makeup details and more natural expressions.

They also help the gallery tell the story of the afternoon leading into the night.

Two Friends, One Brick Wall and a Birthday Weekend

Once both women were ready, we moved into two-person portraits.

A brick wall gave us a more textured, urban background that contrasted nicely with the cleaner look of the suite.

For these photographs, I mixed traditional side-by-side poses with closer friendship portraits and more relaxed interactions.

The goal wasn't to make them look overly posed.

I gave enough direction to control posture, hands, spacing and angles, then let their actual personalities do the rest.

That balance is a major part of how I photograph birthday and milestone portraits in New Orleans.

Burgundy Bar: Red Light, Chandeliers and a Completely Different Mood

Then the shoot changed.

Burgundy Bar gave us deep red lighting, a piano, chandeliers and diamond-stitched red seating. It looked completely different from the Michael Suite and allowed the second half of the gallery to become darker, richer and more nightlife-driven.

This is exactly why I like locations that provide multiple environments.

The bright hotel photographs established the birthday trip. The bar photographs felt like the transition into concert night.

Red ambient lighting can be challenging because I don't want to completely neutralize it and make the room look like somewhere else. Instead, the goal is to protect skin tone while leaving enough red in the background to preserve the atmosphere.

We created seated portraits, standing photographs near the piano and chandelier, individual images and photographs of the two friends together.

Black and Gold Bathroom Portraits

The final environment gave us another dramatic change.

A black bathroom with gold accents allowed us to create cleaner, more graphic images using the contrast between dark surfaces, warm metallic details and skin.

Bathrooms are often overlooked during hotel portrait sessions, but a well-designed bathroom can be one of the strongest areas in the entire room.

Mirrors, countertops, fixtures and directional lighting can all become part of the composition.

By the end of this session, we had photographed one birthday celebration in seven visually different ways without turning it into seven unrelated shoots.
